| Owner/Client El Paso/Coastal Refining Company | Project Description Fast track rehabilitation of two open ocean Reef Berths for 300,000 and 500,000 DWT vessels during refinery turnaround. The project included the replacement of ten 16" marine loading arms, 26 walkways to 200 feet long, fenders, capstans and a 48" diameter crude oil line. One of the project's challenges was to install a new breasting dolphin which required driving a 90" diameter, 200' long monopile inside an existing 98" pile which was broken off 25' above the sea bed. A special guide was designed, fabricated, and installed by Weeks to allow the new pile to be successfully driven. Additionally, two 36" diameter by 210' long battered piles and supports were installed to reinforce an existing mooring dolphin. The "top hat" assembly consisting of a platform and fender assembly weighing over 50 tons placed on and then welded to the monopile. New fender supports were fabricated and installed for the existing breasting dolphins. Extensive refurbishment of existing steel and concrete structures was also performed. Enabling this rehabilitation project in such an exposed location was the availability of the Weeks 526, a 350 ton floating crane barge, and the Weeks 750, a jack-up barge with a 4100 ringer crane, both of which have significant experience working in open water. |
