Over the years, Weeks Marine has performed numerous maintenance dredging projects on the Atchafalaya River system. The Atchafalaya River is a critical component of the overall navigation infrastructure systems of south Louisiana and serves the many needs of the interstate commerce community, especially the oil and gas industries. Constant shoaling in the bay and bar areas demand an ongoing maintenance effort which is administered by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District.
WMI has used a variety of cutter suction dredges to perform these projects, including the Capt. Frank and the GD Morgan. The dredged materials are used beneficially to create marsh islands in open water that are used as wildlife habitat.
