Baltimore Harbor Maintenance

Location: Baltimore Harbor, MD
Owner: USACE Baltimore District
Completion Date: January 1, 2009
Categories: Dredging, Navigation
WMI was contracted by the Corps of Engineers Baltimore District to dredge approximately 1.8M cubic yards of maintenance material from the Baltimore Harbor channels. The dredging was performed using two large clamshell dredges. The material was loaded into barges and transported to the Hart-Miller Island upland disposal facility. Upon arrival at the disposal facility, the dredged material was removed from the scows using the Weeks 320, a hydraulic unloader with a 27” inch pumping system. In order to mitigate impacts to the Bay, the contract required a closed loop unloading operation. WMI designed and implemented an unloading system that involved (8) discharge points and re-circulated slurry water. The operation employed numerous pieces of dredging equipment, barges and towing vessels all of which required disciplined coordination to accomplish the project on time and within budget.
