Fabrication and installation of over 300 erosion control mats over the PATH subway tunnels in the Hudson River between New York and New Jersey to protect the near-exposed subway tubes from terrorism. The proprietary composite mats are composed of 6” thick concrete blocks tied together with wire rope and sandwiched between 2 polyurea coated geotextile fabrics. The 122-130 ton mats, up to 110’ long, were installed using the Weeks-532, a 350-ton capacity crane barge. A custom lift frame using a GPS system accurate to within 6“ was used to remotely release the mats on the river bottom. Weeks Marine was able to shorten the project duration by several months through innovative design changes and production techniques.
