Weeks Marine Inc. with joint venture partner Grow Tunneling was awarded a contract to construct a new bridge pier protection system.  The design provided by URS Greiner, was a precast “T- beam” fender system supported by pipe piles.  Ninety-six 48" diameter  pipe piles were driven up to 140 feet long with the final capacity of each pile between 500 and 750 tons.  A total of 56 T-beam units were cast, ranging in weight from 90 to 280 tons.  The WEEKS 533 was outfitted with a short boom so it could set the precast units under the envelope of the bridge.  Once all of the precast was in place, closures were poured. Water tight cofferdams were installed around the post tensioning ducts which were located below MLW.  The bundled tendons ranged from 206 feet to 361 feet long were installed and  jacked to 360 kips by Weeks Marine.  A mini batch plant was set up on the barge for grouting the tendons.  Following the post tension work, we installed hand rails, ladders, stairs, and UHMW Poly facing on the outside of the fenders.
