Weeks Marine Receives Three Signal Mutual Safety Awards for 2021-2022

February 27, 2023

Each year, Signal Mutual, the largest group insurer of Longshore and Harbor Worker benefits in the United States, recognizes a select few members that demonstrate superior safety culture and performance. This year, Weeks Marine was among those few, receiving three awards that underscore our continued commitment to safety at their annual conference in Salt Lake City, UT from February 1-3.

Matt Hicks, Construction Division HSE Manager, was named a Safety Professional of the Year for 2021-2022.

Hicks earned this award by setting high safety standards based on his personal values and commitment to preventing workplace injuries and illnesses and by making significant contributions to organizational excellence through the implementation of safety culture and a Safety Management System.

“At Weeks Marine, our people are our most important asset, and their safety and well-being are paramount to our success,” said Hicks. “As the Divisional HSE Manager, I’m able to work directly with our project and craft teams to ensure safety remains our top priority. Our teams demonstrate their commitment to our safety goals each and every day.”

At the organizational level, Weeks received the Industry Safety Leadership Award for 2021-2022 because of our strong safety performance, which included no fatalities in the last three years, among other key factors.

Weeks also won the Safety Excellence Award for 2021-2022, Signal’s highest award of honor, recognizing that Weeks Marine exemplifies the promotion of employee safety and health throughout our organization. Recipients of this prestigious award demonstrate a commitment to the prevention of workplace injuries and illness though organizational safety initiatives and have safety as a core value.

“It’s no secret there are hazards in our line of work, but I see first-hand the level of commitment to safety our team brings,” said Chris Hynes, Chief Operating Officer at Weeks Marine. “Safety is at the forefront of all we do and we continuously work to improve our safety culture. At Weeks Marine, safety isn’t just a goal or priority – it’s a mindset and a value lived every day by employees at all levels of the organization, ensuring everyone goes home safe.”

These recent safety awards add to a growing list earned by Weeks Marine and its family companies. In 2021, Weeks received a Safety Appreciation Award from the Council for Dredging & Marine Construction for over 250,000 hours without a recordable or lost time incident aboard our hopper dredge, Magdalen. Additionally, our subsidiary North American Aggregates received a 2021 MSHA Achievements in Safety award for zero recordable accidents that year.
