Upgrading the pier infrastructure for this vital naval base.

For this project with the Department of Defense, Weeks upgraded the existing Pier 2, transferring operations from Pier 3 to Pier 2. A complete demolition of 265,000 square feet of Pier 3 was undertaken, along with a complete removal of 8,890 ea of timber piles. This phase of the project required the disposal of 35,000 tons of debris at off-shore reefs in addition to the enlisting of Weeks Bucket Dredge 551 to dredge the upland disposal of 302,000 m3 of contaminated materials.

The upgrade began with the installation of 365 ea 42” diameter steel piles with lengths up to 190 lf. The construction of this 214,000 square foot heavy-duty concrete superstructure consisted of a combination of very large precast concrete elements and cast in place concrete, including crane rail and railroad tracks. Electrical installations include 15.4 KV feeder cables to two substations, while mechanical installations comprised of a total of 12,000 lf of piping of various diameters. Six buildings with a total area of 16,200 square feet were constructed.
